Brother Matthew (Andrew) Krawchyk, 85, peacefully passed on to his next life, with loved ones by his side, on July 26, 2018. He was the first born to Andy and Eleanor Krawchyk on August 28, 1932, and was named after his father. After graduating from West Allegheny High School in 1950, he enlisted in the PA Air National Guard and began a career as an aircraft mechanic. In 1958, he felt the need to do more, and entered the St. Paul of the Cross Monastery in Pittsburgh, to begin life as a brother in the Passionist community. He took the name of Matthew, and eventually would complete more than 60 years of faithful and devoted service at St.Paul’s and also at the Holy Family Monastery in West Hartford Connecticut. He held numerous roles in operating both facilities, but excelled at aiding anyone who came through the monastery doors. At Holy Family, he initiated a Christian youth encounter program, helping children of all ages discover and develop their self-worth. At St. Paul’s, he established a mission for indigent families, and annually delivered clothing and Christmas presents to people in need, in cooperation with the Notre Dame Club of Pittsburgh. He was universally loved wherever he went, and thoroughly enjoyed serving others through a wide variety of charity and related work.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Joanne Wilson, and his nephew Roger Kulak. He is survived by a family grateful for his life and the example he set, including brothers William (Rome) of Aliquippa, Robert (Gerrie) of Imperial, Harold (Catherine) of Bulger, James (Debbie) of New Wilmington, and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 31, in the St. Paul of the Cross Monastery Chapel, 148 Monastery Avenue, Pittsburgh, from 7 to 9:30 PM, including an 8 PM prayer service. A funeral mass in the Monastery Church will take place on Wednesday, August 1, at 10:30 AM, followed by a burial service on the Monastery grounds. Arrangements made John J. Gmiter Funeral Home, Ltd.
Memorials may be offered to St. Paul of the Cross Monastery.
