Peacefully, on Tuesday, December 31, 2024. Dedicated and caring husband, father, and grandfather. Preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Verna (Mathews), his brothers Joseph and Myron, and sisters Helen, Emily, Irene, Rosie, and his twin Elsie. Survived by his five children, Karen (Wayne) Zientarski, Susan (James) Hillen, Barbara (Michael) Kaczmarek, Leo (Jackie) Karchut, Jr., and Amy (Jaison) Milkovich; and six grandchildren, Brandon Hillen, Katrina Zientarski, Ryan Hillen, Natalea Hillen, Madison Milkovich, and Myron Milkovich. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, and godchildren. A lifelong member of the Boy Scouts, he always called baked potatoes “mickies”. Leo was a cabinet maker who ran his own business, LMK Kitchen Center, for many years. He was a member of the Carpenters Union Local 252. He loved doing puzzles and watching old movies. Leo was known for his meticulous nature and his organization… every tool had a special storage place. His nickname “Chief” was extremely appropriate, and there was always a “Leo’s Way” of doing things. Always looking at the details, if something was ever off level by an 1/8 of an inch, he spotted it. Leo did a lot of work for his church, including cabinet and woodwork, and helping to make the famous pyrohy. He enjoyed speaking and singing in Ukrainian, especially at mass and during the holidays. He will always be remembered for his sense of humor and friendliness. Family and friends will be received at the John J. Gmiter Funeral Home, Ltd, 119 South 15th Street, Pittsburgh, PA, on Friday, January 3, 2025 from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm, with Parastas at 5:30 pm. Divine Liturgy will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2025 at 10 am at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church, 109 S. 7th Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15203.
