Matthew Mikrut

Matthew Mikrut (95) of Pittsburgh, PA (South Side), passed away on April 22, 2023.  Matthew was the beloved father of Richard (Brenda), Kevin (Michelle), Jeff (Barb), and Drew (Joyce) Mikrut.  Matthew was predeceased by his loving wife, Geraldine Mikrut, his son, Gary (Sharon) Mikrut, and Great-Grandson, Matthew Cowan.  Grandfather to Jennifer (Matt) Cowan, James (Donald) Mikrut, Chad (Katie) Mikrut, Ryan Mikrut, Zachary (Samantha) Mikrut, Kelly (Greg) Schmitt, Morgan (Austin) Clark, and Ian (Megan) Mikrut.  Great-Grandfather to Sydney (Nate) Krizon, Madison Cowan, Hutson Mikrut, Lincoln Clark, Clara Schmitt, Lauren Mikrut, and Ellie Clark.  Matthew was a Navy veteran – he was a Seaman 2nd Class aboard the USS Prairie, he enlisted on April 6, 1945 and received an honorable discharge on August 11, 1946.  He was stationed out of USNTS Bainbridge, MD. Matthew was employed full time by the University of Pittsburgh and held many part-time jobs throughout his working career.  Matthew was a very active member of the American Legion Post 540 in Brookline, PA, where he was the Sargent at Arms for many terms.  He was an active volunteer within the organization and spent many hours volunteering at the local Veterans Hospitals and was involved with annual fundraisers within the post. Friends received at the John J. Gmiter Funeral Home, 119 South 15th Street, South Side on Wednesday, April 26, 2023 from 2 - 8 pm.  Funeral prayer on Thursday, April 27, 2023 at 9 am.  Mass of Christian Burial in Saint Mary of the Mount Church, Mary, Queen of Peace Parish on April 27, 2023 at 10 am.  Private Burial at Prince of Peace Cemetery (St. Adalbert).  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Legion Charities at https://mylegion.org/personifyEbusiness/Donate.
