On Saturday, July 20, 2024, Verna passed quietly at home surrounded by her family. Verna was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Leo; five children, Karen (Wayne) Zientarski, Susan (James) Hillen, Barbara (Michael) Kaczmarek, Leo (Jackie) Karchut, Jr., and Amy (Jaison) Milkovich; and six grandchildren, Brandon Hillen, Katrina Zientarski, Ryan Hillen, Natalea Hillen, Madison Milkovich, and Myron Milkovich. Verna was preceded in death by her sister, Frances Mathews Gable, and her brothers, Robert Mathews and Thomas Mathews. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was employed as a customer service clerk at Giant Eagle for 25 years. Verna was the star of the wildly popular Facebook feature "Where's Verna?". She was an avid cook known for her specialties, haluski and potato salad. She would always greet you with her warm welcoming smile which will be greatly missed. Family and friends will be received at the John J. Gmiter Funeral Home, Ltd, 119 South 15th Street, Pittsburgh, PA, on Tuesday, July 23, 2024 from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm, with Parastas occurring at 4:30 pm. Divine Liturgy will be held on Wednesday, July 24, 2024 at 10 am at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church, 109 S. 7th Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15203.
